Map
The lively Provencal town of Lorgues is situated in the
Var region, 13 km from Draguignan, an hour's drive from Cannes and
a little less from St Tropez. Lorgues is an old fortified town
dating back to medieval times, with some earlier Roman influences,
full of narrow vaulted streets and archways, pastel walls and
painted shutters. From the mountains behind the town you can see
the sea. The Church of St Martin dominates the central part of
Lorgues surrounded by leafy squares and sun dappled streets
protected by the huge Plane trees so symbolic of Provencal towns.
The surrounding countryside is a beautiful mosaic of olive-covered
hills, lavender fields and vines. This is serious wine country with
miles and miles of fields dedicated to the vineyards, and such
well-known domaines as Chateau d'Ott, Chateau Roubine, Chateau de
Berne, and Chateau des Crostes, which stretch towards the horizon
as far as the eye can see.
